Emergency departments
When to come straight to emergency
- Chest pain, tightness or pressure — especially with sweating, nausea or pain spreading to the arm or jaw
- Sudden weakness or numbness on one side, a drooping face, or slurred speech
- Difficulty breathing, or breathlessness that came on suddenly
- Heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure
- Loss of consciousness, a seizure, or a head injury with vomiting or confusion
- A severe allergic reaction — swelling of the face or throat, or a widespread rash with breathlessness
- Serious burns, a suspected fracture with deformity, or a road traffic injury
What to bring, if you can
Do not delay coming in to collect these. If someone can bring them later, that is fine.
- Any medicines the patient takes, or a photo of the strips
- Previous discharge summaries or reports, if the problem is a known one
- A photo ID and insurance card
- The name and number of the patient’s regular doctor
